Gaia Moore

Fearless is a series of teen books written by Francine Pascal. The series is set in New York City and tells the story of Gaia Moore, a seventeen year old girl who was born without the fear gene, making her fearless.

Years ago, Tom Moore, a CIA agent, met a young Russian woman named Katia in a library in New York. Tom Moore had a twin brother named Oliver Moore who also fell in love with Katia. Katia was the daughter of the Russian mafia lord, and so she, and those associated with her such as Tom and Oliver, led dangerous lives. A few years later, Tom and Katia were married and they had a young daughter, Gaia Moore. Oliver became crazy with jealousy and soon began trying to kill Tom, Katia or Gaia. Early on, they didn’t know that Gaia Moore was born without the fear gene, and is not capable of feeling fear. When this was discovered, Tom Moore began training Gaia in several martial arts, and various any other skills that he found useful with his experience as a CIA agent. She speaks seven languages, has perfect marksmanship, has the sharpest reflexes, and can run as fast as an Olympic runner; she is a perfect human being. At the age of twelve, when Tom, Katia, and Gaia were staying at their winter house, Oliver Moore came for the last time to kill his twin brother. However, instead of shooting Tom he, supposedly accidentally, shot Katia, destroying Gaia’s life and Tom’s life forever. Shortly after, Tom left Gaia and was consumed by his work. Gaia was subsequently moved through various foster care homes before ending up in New York City with a good friend of her father's.

The first book in the series begins with Gaia's 17th birthday. She has moved to the Greenwich Village area to live with George, a good friend of her father's from the time that they both were in the CIA, and George's wife Ella. Though she is fearless, Gaia experiences the full range of insecurities and problematic emotions as a teenager when she first enters her new high school. She befriends Ed, a paraplegic, develops a crush against a guy named Sam who goes to NYU, and--by the second week of school--manages to become enemies with the most popular girl at school. At first, the story sounds like a teen soap, but she does this all while discovering dark secrets about her father's CIA past, learning the "truth" about her mother's death, being monitored by a terrorist called Loki, and wandering the streets of New York City doling out vigilante justice to criminals.
