Characters

Eric Forman
Eric is a nice guy at heart. He is also generally geeky, physically weak, and somewhat clumsy. He is a smart-aleck teenager with a lightning-fast wit and a sarcastic and deadpan sense of humor. His main relationship is with Donna.

Jackie Burkhart
Jackie is introduced in the pilot episode primarily as Michael Kelso's girlfriend. She likes to give advice which often sounds typically thoughtless and superficial, but turns out to be correct. She is also something of a chatterbox, rambling on about things that the group (and everyone else) has no interest in. She often is shown thwarting the affinity with others in the group due to her self-absorbed persona. The negative aspects of her personality slowly begin to fade as she matures throughout the seasons, however, and by season 5 Jackie begins to show a more vulnerable and insecure side of herself, possibly as a result of her father's imprisonment and her mother's abandonment of her, as well as her failed romantic relationships.

Steven Hyde
Hyde was abandoned by his mother. His stepfather, Bud, had left some years earlier. The Formans adopted him into the family after his mother abandoned him, and he lives in a room in their basement. Hyde found a job working at the Foto Hut with his burned-out hippie boss Leo. Hyde and Leo become best friends until Leo suddenly left town, because he remembered that he was only supposed to stay in Point Place for a short time, yet stayed for eight years, leaving his family behind. He gave the money he made to Red and Kitty to help them pay the bills. It is evidenced thus that Hyde has a sense of propriety and responsibility to rival that of his friend Eric's, yet is not proud of it as he is more accustomed to his stoner lifestyle.

Michael Kelso
Tall, lanky and long-haired, he is the dim-witted pretty-boy of the group, coasting through life on his good looks. His behavior is very much in line with a stereotypical oversexed lunkhead or a male-bimbo. He spends most of the series in a mutually parasitic relationship with the equally vapid Jackie Burkhart, whom he continues to obsess over following their numerous breakups. In spite of his stupidity, Kelso was shown on several occasions not to be immature, simply unmotivated; when he was either forced to or chose to, Kelso displayed startling intelligence unbecoming of his usual personality or hijinks. Near the end of the series, Kelso became one of the first characters to completely break away from adolescence and into adulthood when he impregnated a girl with whom he had a one-night-stand; to his friends' surprise, Kelso took responsibility for the child, moving to Chicago to take a job to support and be near his newborn daughter.

Donna Pinciotti
Donna lives with her parents, Midge and Bob Pinciotti. An intelligent, witty teenager with feminist ideals, Donna is outwardly confident and strong, sometimes to the point of coming across as arrogant or self-righteous. She calls upon these personal qualities to deal with her personal issues, such as her parents' shaky relationship, and the revelation that they conceived her while in high school. She has some difficulty expressing her feminine side, because she views traditional feminine traits as restraining and outdated. She dislikes skirts, makeup, and dresses, and insists on wearing jeans at all times, but she will dress nice for a special occasion and tried "being pretty" for her prom and for a trip to a nightclub, where the bouncer judged her "foxy". As another exception, after her wedding with Eric was called off, she decided to change her looks and dyed her hair blonde. Jackie Burkhart repeatedly calls Donna a "lumberjack" and a "giant", due to her penchant for plaid shirts and her tall stature.

Fez
Fez seems to have the best friendships with both Hyde and Kelso. He and Hyde both joke around like stealing Kelso's cop car and he and Kelso have similar traits such as flirting with women. Fez's childish personality is a lot like Kelso's stupidity causing Hyde to act as an older brother for Fez. Fez has a very strong love for candy, usually spending most of his American money on it.

Kitty Forman
Kitty is a nurse but sometimes takes a break from her career to make peace in the family. She also has a very recognizable laugh and a fondness for square dancing. Kitty is in very many ways a typical 1970's wife and mother, putting her family first and always trying to smooth over the many conflicts within her household, although her efforts usually fail. She is a foster mother to the entire gang, and is a source of comfort and advice for them all. Kitty is married to Red Forman. She is mother to daughter Laurie, with whom she has a stressful relationship, and son Eric, whom she has a habit of overprotecting. Unlike Red, Kitty also seems to enjoy Eric's friends hanging around the house, sometimes smothering them. One of Kitty's favorite pastimes is being a mother — making sandwiches, baking cookies, and looking after children. She does not want Eric to move out, fearing that if he does, she will have no one to take care of. She convinced Red that the family should take in Steven Hyde when Hyde's mother abandoned the teenager.

Red Forman
Red's hobbies include working with his power tools, drinking beer, watching television, reading the newspaper, hunting, and fishing. In general Red enjoys being left alone, and doesn't care that he has few real friends besides Kitty and sometimes Bob. He dislikes talking to his neighbors, the Pinciottis, because he might end up having to spend time with them, something which happens more than he would like. Red also enjoys killing things, such as every new batch of squirrels that appears in the spring, and the chipmunks who steal the tomatoes Kitty grows in the garden. Red has very specific ideas about what men can and cannot do, believing that they should keep their emotions bottled up and be skilled at physical sports like hunting and football. He does not think they should hug or express "love" for each other; he once warned Eric that if Eric told him he loved him, Red's heart would explode. He also has a hard time expressing his own emotions except when he is angry.
